Just Yesterday
by Sufian Akram
GBR

Just yesterday, we were together, playing, and fighting over silly things,
candy sweets, lollipops, chewing gum, remote controls, and chicken wings.

Just yesterday, you were chasing me around the house because i read your secret diary,
you said we were noisy so you would always go away to study at the library.

Just yesterday, you stuck up for me, when i was getting bullied,
i remember you told me you'd always be here for me and to never get worried.

Just yesterday, you came home crying and tried to take your own life,
i remember the tears running down from your eyes, and the blood on the knife.

Just yesterday, we were happy, and then you started changing because of your stupid friends,
i remember finding drugs in your room, i remember you said, "don't tell mum, lets just pretend."

Just yesterday, you ran away from home, because mum and dad tried to get you engaged to someone back home,
they thought getting married would help you, and to maybe stop you being alone.

Just yesterday, i saw you standing on a corner late at night,
and when i tried to approach you,you jumped into a strange mans car after he flashed his light,

Just yesterday, we got a phone call from the police,
saying your body has been found, come identify her please.

Just yesterday, we were a happy family, who would always stand together through rough times,
Now i sit here blaming myself, i should have helped you, why did i not read the signs?

Just yesterday, i visited your grave,
i put out my hands and made a prayer,

and asked Allah not to let another brother, lose his sister like i lost you, and be left in this constant despair.
