Pearls and the Messenger
by Naida Jakirlic
USA

If pearls are to be valued
then were does your value lie
ya Habibullah?

You were not sent
except as a mercy
to all the worlds…
a mercy to mine
as I try to grasp
the essence of your character…
your beauty, compassion,
and the mercy
bestowed upon you
by the most Merciful
of those who give mercy.

If pearls are to be beloved
then were does love for you lie
ya Khalilallah?

With love you brought to me
this message…
with your blood
and tears
and sweat (the sweetest scent of musk)
you left me with the Word of my Creator
and you left us to meet your Khalil
as the world bid farewell
to the mercy for all the worlds
sent by the most Merciful.

If pearls are to be dearest
then where does closeness for you lie
ya Khalilallah?

On Aisha's lap your head rested,
with al-Siddiq you shared a tiny cave,
the son of Khattab was your fiercest defendant,
the keeper of Noorayn to your daughters was wed,
and young Ali was but a part of your blessed household;
yet we
some 1400 years later
yearn for closeness
to you
Ya Rasoolallah…
through your Sunnah
we hope to achieve a morsel
of what the best of generations
the best of people got to taste:
the sweetness of your character
the beauty of your nature
the light of your Message and your ways.

If pearls are to be pearls
most beloved
most pure,
you, ya Rasoolallah
are my most beloved
among men;
the most Merciful sent you as a mercy
to all the worlds
and I will forever yearn to taste
a fragment of that mercy
and will forever struggle to attain
the honor of being a part of your Ummah
ya Khalilallah.

May the peace and blessings be upon you
o most beloved,
most pure,
and I pray to Him in whose Hands my soul is
to make me a part of your Ummah
to unite us on that fateful day
so that I can truly taste
the sweetness of your beauty,
and your character,
blessed be your name.
