My Gratitude Deficient
by Lauren T
AUS

I'm quick to complain and express my disgust
At your efforts; all for me
It's never good enough for my recognition
I'm too high up on my throne to listen
The throne you've worked for me to sit on
The money I snatch from your outstretched hands
Little do I know the extent of the struggle required for me to be able to grab
Yet I waste it and forget

Help me when I need it
But don't bother me otherwise
Do what I want when I want it
Though, when it concerns your instructions for me
We'll come up with a compromise
You put up with my complaints on your shortcomings
And listen to the echoes of the door as it slams
In your face
My tantrums you've forgiven, time and time again
Yet I manipulate it and forget

Wake me from my slumber
So I remain committed to my Lord
My gratitude towards your compassion deficient
As I continually disregard the pain you first endured
My forgetfulness is chronic
Lucid is your need
Let me extract a dua' and smother it in sincerity:
"Ya Rabb, Have mercy on my Parents, as they have had on me"
Before I become distracted by the bright lights
Of the adornments of life
And forget.
