Genocide
by Munira Anas
USA

When we live through it, we pretend it's not there,
And we turn a blind eye, and we just don't care.
And when it's over, we look at all the damage and we ask:
Why, when it was all in our hands, did we ignore the task?

How could we let it fall into the hands of devils when we had our chance?
Instead of fighting in battle array, we maintained our stance.
Now all we have left is regret,
And the books and movies make us fret.

But we forget that there are people who had to endure
The scenes we only watch on TV, after having closed the door
To humanity, compassion, and any sense of love.
And we finally realize how much we have to be ashamed of.

But by then it's too late, too many people have died,
Men, women and children who wanted us on their side!
But instead of turning to them, we turned away,
And allowed 500 people to be murdered everyday.

But wait a second; it's not over yet,
And we still have that chance before we regret.
Then why not take advantage of it, and be HUMAN?
We fail to realize this isn't just kindness, but our obligation!

So before we look back and count the losses,
Why don't we try to be our own bosses?
Before we cry, mourning a genocide that already hit,
Why don't we step up once and for all to stop it?
